108 Names of Lord Shiva

Lord Shiva is one of the most important Hindu deities. In Hinduism, deities are called by many names, which describe them in different ways. These names often refer to specific stories about the deities, functions they perform, or ways of thinking about them. Study of these names is helpful to understanding deities from multiple points of view. Some names are used by more than one deity, so looking for names that uniquely describe a deity is one way to pinpoint their functions. Lord Shiva is also known by hundreds of names. There are at least eight different versions of the "Shiva Sahasranama" (thousand names of Lord Shiva), devotional hymns (stotras) listing many names of Shiva. The version appearing in Book 13 (Anuśāsanaparvan) of the Mahabharata is considered the kernel of this tradion. Again, the "Shri Rudram Chamakam", also known as the "Śatarudriya", is a devotional hymn to Shiva hailing him by many names. The Shiva Purana lists 1008 names for Lord Shiva. Each of these names in Sanskrit signifies certain attribute of the Lord.
"108" is a common auspicious number for the Hindus, specially during chanting or offering something to God, e.g., offering 108
Tulsi / Bael leaves to the Lord, or like pouring 108 aahuti-s (offerings) in the yagna, or chanting 108 names of the Lord, and so on. Though some might opt for 1008 times, while others might opt for 100008 times, or some, even 28 times, and so on.
